Stunning Comeback Powers Goa Challengers to Victory Over Chennai

In a nail-biting encounter of Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) season 5, Athlead Goa Challengers emerged victorious over Chennai Lions with a 9-6 scoreline.

India’s top table tennis talent faced off at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on August 31, 2024.

The match was a closely contested affair, with both teams displaying exceptional skill and determination. Achanta Sharath Kamal, the star player for Chennai Lions, put in a strong performance but was unable to prevent his team’s defeat. Harmeet Desai of Athlead Goa Challengers played a crucial role in his team’s victory, winning multiple matches.

The match was a back-and-forth battle, as both teams traded blows. Sharath Kamal overpowered his Italian opponent, Mihai Bobocica, winning 2-1. However, Sakura Mori quickly doubled Chennai’s lead with a hard-fought victory over Yangzi Liu.

The turning point of the match came in the mixed doubles, where Yangzi Liu and Harmeet Desai produced an impressive performance to outplay the formidable combination of Sharath and Sakura. Afterwards, Desai bolstered the advantage for Goa by claiming his second victory of the tie, defeating Jules Rolland. Yashaswini Ghorpade pulled off a giant-slaying act by defeating the veteran Mouma Das.

The Foreign Player of the Tie went to Yangzi Liu, while Harmeet Desai earned the Indian Player of the Tie honour.

Athlead Goa Challengers are now placed fifth on the league table with 29 points, while Chennai Lions are sixth with 25 points. The league is heating up as teams battle it out for a place in the playoffs.
